The differences between the laser engraving machine servo motor and the stepper motor

by Oree Laser

There are two main types of motors used in laser engraving machines, one is servo motor, and the other is stepper motor. Both types of motor equipment have their characteristic, and are widely used today. So, what are the differences between the servo motor and the stepper motor?

Control precision

The control precision of the servo motor is higher than the stepper motor.

The low-frequency characteristics

The low-frequency running stability of the stepper motor is lower than servo motor in low-speed machining, and the servo motor AC power is more stable.

Overload capability

AC servo motors have a strong overload capability, while stepper motors generally do not have overload capability.

The output speed

The output speed of the stepping motor is much lower than the servo motor. And the speed of the stepping motor is unstable, floating between 300 and 600 RPM, and the servo motor is a constant force output,2000 or 3000 RPM. The output torque of the stepping motor decreases as the speed increases, and it drops sharply at higher speeds, causing its operation unstable, so its maximum working speed is generally 300-600RPM. The AC servo motor is a constant torque output, that is, it can output the rated torque within its rated speed(generally 2000RPM or 3000RPM), and it is a constant power output above the rated speed.

Different running performance

The servo motor does not have lost or overshot, and its stability is high.

Different speed response performance

It takes 200 to 400 milliseconds for the stepper motor to accelerate from standstill to the operating speed(typically several hundred revolutions per minute). The AC servo system has better acceleration performance.Taking Yaskawa servo motor as an example, it takes only a few milliseconds to accelerate from standstill to its rated speed of 300 RPM, which can be used for control application requiring fast start and stop. And most of the Oree laser cutting machines use Yaskawa servo motors.

Control precision

In the case of low speed(generally 600 rpm), the accuracy of the stepping motor is as high as a servo motor. In the case of high speed(generally 1200 rpm), the stepping motor will lose step due to the drop of its characteristic torque, so the accuracy is not high.SO the stepper motor is used at low speed, and the servo motor is used at high speed.

Control mode

The stepping motor is open-loop control, there is no feedback, so the control is simple, only need to be equipped with a driver, and the control part sends a pulse; in contrast, servo motor control is relatively more complicated.

Price

Stepper motors are cheap and servo motors are expensive.

In summary, the servo motor system is much better than the stepping device, and its performance is superior. Stepper motors can also easily perform tasks when the equipment requirements are not high. This requires buyers to consider their own industry and products at the time of purchase, and choose which motor to use.
